WISDOM TEETH REMOVAL

Human permanent dentition has 32 teeth inclusive of three molars on each segment. The third molar is called the WISDOM TEETH owing to the age it usually erupts which is around 17-21 years, close to adolescence. When there is not much space in the arch, the wisdom tooth either erupts away from its actual position or gets stuck within the bone. The wisdom teeth can have the following outcomes: Wisdom teeth that are partially out will be covered by the gingiva and serves as a pocket for food accumulation. It might lead to gingival swelling, infection and stiffness of the jaw. Wisdom teeth that are erupted in an angulated manner might cause food impaction and cause decay between the teeth. They may also cause ulcerations on the inner side of the mouth. Wisdom teeth stuck inside the bone might end up as a cyst, compress the underlying nerve or damage the neighbouring structures. The patient experiences pain which may be radiating pain to the head or jaw. In cases of infection, there will be associated swelling. The treatment of wisdom teeth includes surgical removal. A radiographic investigation is done prior to the procedure and the treatment is planned accordingly. There might be mild post-operative swelling and discomfort which will be managed with adequate pain medications. In cases, where the tooth is not removed, then regular checkups in advised to avoid any complications.
