Clear aligners are appliances used for aligning teeth. They are transparent and hence appears more pleasing when the patient smiles. They are customised individually for each patient based on models and X-rays. The treatment consists of series of aligners that should be worn by the patient for a minimum of 20 hours as explained by the doctor. Each aligner is programmed to cause tooth movement at a slow pace. Once the designated tooth movement is attained, the next aligner will be provided for the patient. It is used for the treatment of spacing, crowding and certain mal-alignment cases. The advantages include · more esthetic than the conventional treatment that has brackets and wire components. · More comfortable to the patient. · Lesser appointments. · It is removable and hence there are no food restrictions and maintenance is easier. The setbacks are that· The success of the treatment is entirely dependent on the patient’s cooperation and hence not preferable for young children. It is not prescribed for certain malalignment issues.
